Man charged with murder in Evander, attends court in a wheelchair
Mlamuli Siyaya allegedly shot and killed a woman during a hostage situation before turning the gun on himself.
The Evander Magistrate’s Court has postponed Mlamuli Siyaya’s case to October 2.
Siyaya faces charges of murder, unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.
The charges stem from a hostage and shooting incident at a rental facility in Evander on May 12, which resulted in multiple fatalities.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is investigating the incident, including the circumstances surrounding the police operation at the premises.
According to an IPID report, a man allegedly held three people hostage at the property before police intervened. During the operation, Siyaya allegedly shot and killed a woman inside the house.
Another man, who was reportedly among those being held hostage, was fatally shot by police after allegedly attempting to flee the residence. He was declared dead at the scene.
Siyaya allegedly sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head during the incident.
He was airlifted to Mediclinic Sandton, where he received medical treatment.
Siyaya is now paralysed and uses a wheelchair as a result of the injuries he sustained.
