Rubble dumping is addressed

All can help to prevent illegal dumping

SECUNDA – The Ridge Times published an article about residents being fed up with dumping sites on 15 November, “Residents are fed up”.

The article came about after a resident raised concerns about rubble being dumped in Sunset Park and surrounding areas.

The head of Communications and Marketing of the Govan Mbeki Municipality, Mr Henry Masango, said: “The disposal of building rubble is addressed within the Solid Waste Management and Cleansing Services bylaws and any department in the municipality, including Building Control, is responsible to enforce these bylaws.

“Anybody can help to prevent illegal dumping by following a few easy steps.

“The complainant needs to make an affidavit regarding the incident and submit any evidence or proof and the affidavit to either the section Building Control (building waste) or Solid Waste (general waste) for further legal action against the offender.

“Once the official complaint with evidence are received, the municipality will summons the offender to appear in court and the complainant will have to testify as a witness.

“If the offender is found guilty, the court will lay charges which can vary between R2 500 or higher for the rehabilitation of the area, or imprisonment,” said Mr Masango.

According to him, the missing manhole cover next to Golden Village in Sunset Park is a result of theft and is being sold as scrap metal to unscrupulous dealers and where possible attempts are being made to replace these metal covers with the concrete ones to deter any vandalism.”
