Keeping children safe on eMbalenhle roads
Counsellor highlights the importance of road patrollers to avoid tragedies.
eMBALENHLE – Children are at risk of being run over by vehicles on the township roads during school holidays.
To ensure this does not happen, Mr Doctor Nkosi, community road safety counsellor, held a road safety programme for pupils from Zamokuhle, Isibanesezwe, Lifalethu primary schools on Wednesday, 20 November.
Though there has not been a case where a child was run over by a vehicle in the recent holidays, Mr Nkosi said the reality that something bad like this could happen remains any parent’s worst nightmare.
He taught pupils about walking on the pavement, crossing the road, distractions and crossing between parked cars.
Mr Nkosi also taught them safe crossing at a stop street, at block pedestrians, at school and pedestrian traffic lights.
“This is why road patrollers at schools are important to ensure children cross the road safely in the mornings and afternoons.”
Mr Nkosi urged parents to also teach their children how to be safe pedestrians and how to be safe passengers whether travelling in a car, bus or taxi.
“It is not about telling them what to do, children learn from what adults do, so you need to be rolemodels.
“Parents need to teach their children about staying safe when crossing the road, walking, biking, taking the bus and even playing around home.”
Mr Nkululeko Mazibuko, teacher from Lifalethu Primary School, said Mr Nkosi’s road safety tips have helped his pupils to safely cross Joe Makhubu Drive.
