Children learn surviving skills at scouts camp in Kinross

Real Players hosts first ever two-day Treasure Hunters Scout Camp for Secunda kids.

SECUNDA – Eleven youngsters put their survival skills to the test during the Real Players’ first ever two-day Treasure Hunters Scout Camp on a farm outside Kinross recently.

Ms Lizelle Hartman said: “It soon became apparent that we chose one of the coldest winter weekends for our outing.

“The children had great fun on the camp, going back to their roots by learning water purification out of natural recourses, pitching their own tents, gathering firewood and building a raft, to name but a few.”

Other activities included treasure hunting, basic survival skills and everyone’s favourite, kleilat.

“We also made use of the opportunity to introduce the children to tug-of-war with a muddy pool in the middle if you lost.

“That is motivation.

“The children explored the whole farm with walking sticks in hand and recovered a few treasures like a cows’ skull, an empty nest and porcupine quills.”

The scouts had to take care of their own dinner and fresh farm chicken, stokbrood and roosterkoek were on the menu.

“We were all half frozen and really tired after the two days, but it was an experience the no-one will soon forget,” said Ms Hartman.
