Radio club tackles project
Project is about fun and pupils need to learn how to work in a team and solve a problem in a team.
EVANDER – The Secunda Amateur Radio Club invited pupils to take part in a project where they are going to send a balloon into the air carrying pupils’ experiments.
Members of the radio club visited Osizweni Training and Development Centre recently and Mr Vincent Nettmann, astronomer from Johannesburg Planetarium, spoke to pupils from various schools in the area.
He told pupils more about the stars, planets, space and global warming and said the stars have different colours and explained how they are formed.
Members of the radio club also explained how the project will work.
“The high altitude balloon that we will launch is aimed at travelling for six hours,” said Mr Christo Kriek from Secunda Amateur Radio Club.
The Grade 10 and 11 pupils will take part in this project and members of the radio club encouraged them to think and use their brains to discover something new.
The balloon will be launched in Vryburg on 4 October.
Some members will travel to Vryburg on that day and others will be in Secunda where they will monitor the balloon.
“This project is about fun and pupils need to learn how to work in a team and solve a problem in a team,” said Mr Kriek.
A GPS and two video cameras will be attached to the balloon.
“We need a programme to control the cameras, which is an experiment for us as well,” said Mr Kriek.
