Sasol donates money to Orphan and Vulnerable Care Programme

HIV/Aids is one of the main contributing factors to the increased number of orphaned and vulnerable children in South Africa.

eMBALENHLE – Sasol handed over R807 413-92 to the Orphan and Vulnerable Children’s (OVC) Programme in eMbalenhle on Wednesday, 25 March.

South Africa is one of the countries with the highest number of people living with HIV in the world which in turn creates a large number of children living without adult protection, nurturing and financial support.

OVCs are often identified through home visits, schools, by community members and door to door campaigns.

Funding from companies like Sasol helps to overcome the challenges which most OVCs are faced with, which is a lack of or limited resources which in turn affect the effectiveness of the programme.

Ms Mashudu Ndou, senior manager: Sasol Secunda Community Affairs, said poverty, family structure breakdown, substance abuse, physical and mental abuse and HIV/Aids are the main contributing factors to the increased number of orphaned and vulnerable children in South Africa.

“Sasol in partnership with Famsa identified this need to support vulnerable children in the surrounding communities.”

“This is in line with the Sasol strategic objective of effecting synergy and alignment of programmes with respect to government priorities and focus in terms of socio economic development and corporate citizenship,” said Ms Ndou.

Ms Catherine Magodi said home based care helps a lot by visiting the kids at home.

The Department of Agriculture began a vegetable garden in the Mandela Section.

“This is a new year for us,” said Ms Magodi, the OVC Programme manager: Famsa in Secunda.

Famsa extended their gratitude towards Graceland Hotel, Casino and Country Club that supported them with food parcel in the past year, as well as taking kids to its entertainment centre.

“Sasol, without you this event would not have been a success,” said Ms Magodi.
