eMBALENHLE – The culture of littering and dumping garbage next to the roads is increase in the area.
Motorists are often seen throwing out rubbish through their car windows.
Almost every section in the area has an illegal dumping site and a bad stench.
It is believed that the stench is caused by animal carcasses that are dumped at these illegal dumping sites.
The Govan Mbeki Municipality has conducted various campaigns against littering and illegal dumping sites, but its impact is not yet evident.
Not so long ago the iKusasa Project placed dustbins in almost every section, but they were stolen.
Residents are divided on this matter.
Some blame the problems on irresponsible residents who are dumping garbage anywhere, and others blame the municipality for not collecting the garbage on time.
However, they all agree that littering and the illegal dumping of garbage are not good practices.
Ms Jane Nkonyane, a resident, suggested that the municipality enforces bylaws.
“If a person is found littering, they must face the law.
“The littering and illegal dumping of garbage not only make our township filthy, but these pose health hazard to all of us.”
Mr Henry Masango, head of communication and marketing of the municipality, said the municipality has launched various campaigns in an attempt to deal with the littering in the area.
Among these was an environmental campaign that teaches residents about the implications of littering.
“We have also built the Buy Back Centre that will be operational soon.
“We believe that this centre will make people see that instead of littering, they can make money.”
