Sasol launch OVC Care Programme in Leandra

The community should speak up against the teachers who have sexual relationships with pupils.

LEANDRA – Sasol together with FAMSA and the Department of Social Development, launched the Orphan and Vulnerable Children Care Programme in Leandra on Tuesday, 2 June.

Ms Marcelle Bester, Director of FAMSA, said the same programme was successfully launched in eMbalenhle three years ago.

She further mentioned that the aim of the programme is to improve the lives of children, irrespective where they come from.

“At Sasol we have a group of engineers who will mentor pupils with mathematics and physical science,” said Ms Bester.

Mr Brendan Sibanyoni who represented the Govan Mbeki Municipality, said children are the future.

Mr Sibanyoni said the programme was launched at the right time because the Minister of Social Development, Ms Bathabile Dlamini, just launched Child Protection Week on Sunday, 31 May.

“During the launch, Ms Dlamini said that an even bigger danger of exposing children to alcohol is that if they start experimenting with it, they usually go on to experiment with drugs and eventually become drug addicts, with serious consequences to society,” said Mr Sibanyoni.

He further mentioned that as government, they believe children are protected and that community members should speak against teachers who have sexual relationships with pupils.

It was mentioned during the launch it is common that when a project is launched, more people become part of it but not because they love the project, but they do it for personal gain.

Ms Catherine Mogodi, Programme Manager of FAMSA, would like to see all the grade 12 pupils from the OVC Care Programme being part of the Sasol bursary award ceremony next year.
