Mandela Day preparations in full swing
Youth For Action prepares to do their bit for Mandela Day.
The Youth For Action Foundation (YFA) in Platrand has launched a Mandela Day programme and will be renovating the community and school hall at Qondulwazi Secondary School on 18 July.
A thorough assessment was made of the school’s dilapidated facilities.
The YFA met with the farmers in the area, requesting support in the form of labour and donations.
Mr Sizwe Mkwanazi, president, and Mr May Maseko, chairman of the School Governing Body, presented their request to revamp the hall.
The farmers expressed their disappointment on the poor state of the school’s property, which was formerly known as Laerskool Platrand.
Ms Sulia Kleynhans, a local farmer, was dismayed on how the school operates in general, especially the poor guidance of pupils to take care of the property.
The YFA and the School Governing Body committee decided to establish a functioning trust property committee to handle all matters regarding the school’s facilities such as bookings for events or church services, meetings and any other use of the facilities.
The school’s house was also not in good condition and the committee is set to review the stay of the tenants.
The committee will also raise funds mainly to maintain the facilities and the property to ensure a safe and an encouraging learning environment.
They would further hold the responsible assistant accountable to ensure that gardens and other areas are taken care of.
The YFA trusts that in the long term the school will be restored.
The YFA, principals and the School Governing Body committees of Qondulwazi and Holmdene Secondary School, invited all stakeholders to be part of the Mandela Day initiatives.
The Holmdene Secondary School’s toilets are also to be renovated on 18 July.
The YFA urged farmers and other interested individuals or businesses to help with donations.
The needed items are paint, vinyl tiles, 10 door handles, tiling adhesive and paint brushes.
The coordinating committee of the Mandela Day programme has also appointed a team, consisting of Ms Moosa Maseko, Mr Mali Mkwanazi, Mr May Maseko, Mr Mthokozisi Ngwenya, Mr Mangena Radebe, Mr Xolani Khumalo and Mr Bafana Mkwanazi, to organise the event.
The community and pupils of the Platrand and Holmdene area are reminded to show their support on 18 July.
