Dispute regarding driver’s licenses
Where is your license? Here is why you have not received it yet.
SECUNDA – We have received many phone calls, complaints and e-mails about renewed driver’s licenses.
Many people have applied in April and not received their license yet.
Some has the problem that their temporary driver’s license has also expired.
The community has also been complaining a lot about the attitude of the staff working at these license offices, hence the fact that it is out of their control.
There have been speculations that it is because of a strike.
It is apparently supposed to take only six weeks, but most drivers have already been waiting for several months.
“My concern is what do I do when I get pulled over? The police will not listen to excuses.” said one driver who is still waiting for his license.
We have received a media release from the Govan Mbeki Municipality regarding the situation:
RENEWED DRIVER’S LICENSES
Govan Mbeki Municipality would like to offer its sincere apology to all members of the community who are affected by the delay in issuing of renewed licenses.
This unfortunate situation is due to disagreement between the municipality and the service provider who has exclusive rights to the production of licenses and thus we rely on their services. However we are working around the clock to address the situation.
The notion that suggests that the delays are due to a strike by the Licensing and Registration Department, is untrue and our stations are fully operational.
We understand that the process of renewing licenses has financial burdens which we cannot override and thus we apologies.
