Leandra residents say Council undermines them
‘We demand the mayor to come and talk to us.’
LEANDRA – Ward 1 residents attended a councillor’s meeting that was tabled to give feedback and raise issues affecting them.
The meeting was called by councillor Mr July Masango and was attended by Leandra and Eendracht residents on Thursday, 3 September at Thusong Hall.
Mr Masango said there are plans in the pipeline to open a mine in about 2017 that will benefit Leandra residents.
Residents demanded that the money used for the mine is used to upgrade Leandra.
They also said local residents should be employed and local service providers should also be considered.
During the meeting residents said they want street lights, because the area is dark and housebreakings are on the increase.
A resident said Leandra and Eendracht residents pay their rates, but nothing is being done for them and some of their roads are still gravel.
It was also raised that Council always begins projects when they receive money, but they never finish them.
Residents applauded Mr Masango for being a good leader and said they are behind him.
They however blamed the executive mayor for not taking them serious and demanded that she come and talk to them.
“We are tired of the mayor sending delegates.
“We suspect Council does not even know that there is a place called Leandra,” said one angry resident.
Residents said they are tired of being referred to Secunda when they go to their municipal offices for enquiries.
“Everything happens in Secunda. Why don’t we have offices that are able to handle things?” asked a resident.
Some residents said they receive phone calls from a company which calls themselves debt collectors for outstanding municipal services and they are instructed to pay at Nedbank.
One woman said she received a call and paid the money in at Nedbank, but when she went to the municipality the money did not appear on her statement.
Mr Masango said residents should pay at the municipal offices, and nowhere else.
He closed the meeting by encouraging residents to attend IDP meetings.
