KINROSS – Simphiwe Molefe was readmitted to the Kinross Primary School on Wednesday, 28 October after the Department of Education intervened.
This Grade 2 pupil was expelled from school for not having a birth certificate.
Mr Trinity Makhubele from the Department of Education visited the school where he had a meeting with Simphiwe’s mother and the principal, Ms Aggie Manana.
Mr Jasper Zwane, Department of Education’s provincial spokesman, said the principal denied the expulsion of 90 pupils who did not have birth certificates and said she asked them to go and fetch them.
“Altogether 74 pupils returned with their birth certificates and 15 pupils who did not have any continued schooling, but Simphiwe did not return to school,” said Mr Zwane.
He said though Simphiwe has a clinic card, his mother should make sure that he gets a birth certificate.
When asked about the child’s rights to education, he said children have the right to education irrespective of challenges.
The Provincial Department of Education was not aware of Simphiwe’s situation and only learned about the case after it was reported by the media.
Simphiwe’s mother said she was relieved that her child will continue schooling while she is trying to obtain an identity document from Home Affairs Department in order to get a birth certificate for Simphiwe.
Her only concern is that her twins are supposed to start school next year and will face the same problem as Simphiwe.
