Department of Health visits taxi rank
The department has identified taxi ranks as one of the communities with limited access to health care services
The Department of Health brought primary health services to the Standerton Taxi Rank on 4 December.
The initiative was aimed at ensuring that the people working at taxi ranks have access to their services at least once a month.
This is one of the department’s strategic goals to improve access to health care services.

Taxi drivers and hawkers provide services to the public at each taxi rank daily.
The Lekwa Local Aids Council Road, the Road Accident Fund and the Standerton Taxi Association also played a vital role in making the event a success.
According to Ms Maria Ntuli,Ward 3 ANC councillor, the people working at taxi ranks, including the drivers and the hawkers, do not have time to visit clinics because of their schedules.
She commended the department, saying they are doing a good job by bringing services to the people.
Ms Ntuli said the Lekwa Municipality will ensure that the taxi rank is a safe environment.
“We will ensure that there are no overflowing manholes and blocked dirty toilets that could be a health hazard,” she also said.
She encouraged everybody at the taxi rank to use the services.
The services that were readily available on the day were:
• Pap smear
• Diabetes testing
• TB screening
• HIV counselling and testing
• High blood pressure screening
• Family planning
• Condom distribution
• Breast cancer screening
The campaign was recently held at the Blue Taxi Rank in eMbalenhle.
