Parents create awareness about autism in Secunda

Support group wants to inform community about autism.

SECUNDA – A group of parents with children with autism began an autism support group in Secunda last year and celebrated World Autism Awareness Month recently.

They created awareness about this condition on Saturday, 15 April at the Duck Pond.

All the members of the group dressed in blue in line with the autism slogan, Light it Up.

They handed out pamphlets and told people more about autism.

A speech therapist, Ms Heidi Meyer, who is also part of this group, said autistic children are often aggressive because they are frustrated and cannot tell their parents how they feel.

One of the parents said when she takes her child to the mall, people stare when he behaves badly.

“I have now learnt to prepare my child and tell him three days in advance that we are going to the mall, then he is much better,” said the parent.

The group will be hosting another awareness campaign at the Mall@eMba on Saturday, 21 April from 10am to 12am.
