Annual brushing programme will teach leaners in the Govan Mbeki municipal area about oral hygiene

Each child will be provided with a dental goodie bag

SECUNDA – Moderndental is launching their second annual brushing programme to educate children and school staff on oral hygiene.

According to Dr Christo Brecher, the programme provides learners with all the information and tools needed to look after their oral health.

“Tooth decay is the number one chronic disease that affects young children and is five times more common than asthma. Untreated, tooth decay can cause pain and infection, resulting in children missing school and experiencing eating and speaking problems.

“Yet tooth decay is preventable,” explained Dr Brecher.

He said good dental habits such as brushing, a healthy diet and regular dental check-ups can greatly reduce the occurrence of cavities.

The project this year involves more than 15 schools in and around Secunda and includes more than 8 000 learners.

Each class will be provided with dental education posters and pamphlets. Every child will be provided with a dental goodie bag which includes a toothbrush and toothpaste.

“We believe there is a real need for the brushing project. This is a fantastic opportunity for teachers to help young children to understand the importance of good oral health,” said Dr Brecher.
