Alleged identity thief works for 18 years on another man’s name in Secunda before being caught

When the complainant returned to the company he worked at 18 years ago and applied for a job, he was told that according to the company records, he was already employed

SECUNDA – A Zimbabwean worked for 18 years under another man’s name before he was caught last week.

The 46 year-old foreigner worked for the same company for almost two decades before they realised that he had been using another person’s identity.

According to Capt Bettina Zondo, spokesperson for the Secunda Police, the complainant in the case is also 46 years-old.

He lost his ID book 18 years ago when he was working as a contract worker at Sasol in Secunda.

“The complainant eventually applied for another ID book and continued to look for work in other areas.”

When the complainant returned to the company he worked 18 years ago and applied for a job, he was told that according to the company records, he was already employed by the company for the past 18 years.

A case of fraud was then opened at the Secunda police and investigation by the Secunda detectives resulted in the arrest of the suspect who is from Zimbabwe.

The alleged identify thief appeared in the Secunda Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 8 August.
