Standerton locals claim contractors are enriching themselves, friends and family
“Stakeholders who are supposed to represent the community, whether in business- or labour-related matters, are failing us,” he said.
Protesters voiced their discontent with Eskom (Tutuka Power Station) and its contractors who they believe are enriching themselves, friends and family by not employing locals.
Hundreds of picketers were seen gathering at the first intersection, exiting Standerton on the R23 Johannesburg Road on 19 September.
A high police presence, ensuring a safe commute for motorist and bystanders, was also visible.
According to Mr Wonder Mnguni, former employee at Tutuka Power Station and member of the Lekwa Development Forum, issues relating to employment and business opportunities, fall on deaf ears.
“Stakeholders who are supposed to represent the community, whether in business- or labour-related matters, are failing us,” he said.
According to him, Actom, a contractor of Tutuka Power Station, used half of its personnel from their maintenance department to carry out an interim job.
“Unemployed locals should have been called up for the task at hand,” Mr Mnguni said.
“Our issues are however, not only with Atcom, but all contractors.”
