Sasol and GMM celebrate #WorldCleanupDay in eMbalenhle

Sasol believes in working with communities on initiatives and programmes that impact them.

eMBALENHLE – Sasol commemorated World Cleanup Day with a community cleanup campaign at eMbalenhle on Friday, 14 September.

Sasol Secunda and Govan Mbeki Municipality, the community, a civil society and business stakeholders identified an opportunity to use World Cleanup Day to create community awareness about waste management issues and business opportunities in the environment area.

World Cleanup Day is a civic-led movement that is dedicated to unite people across approximately 120 countries to clean up waste, raise awareness and implement change to achieve a clean and healthy environment.

About 17 wards from Govan Mbeki Municipality participated in the campaign which is scheduled for the whole week.

Fourteen wards from eMbalenhle and three in Evander/Kinross will also participate in a competition for waste management innovative solutions.

The best performing ward will win a prize that can be used to improve and expand existing projects and to initiate new ones.

Sasol launched an environmental education and awareness campaign that involves communities to address the current increase in illegal dumping sites that emanated from uncontrolled waste disposal.

They want to unlock self-sustainable businesses and employment opportunities in the communities through reducing, re-using and recycling programmes rolled out in partnership with the Govan Mbeki Municipality Buy-Back Centre.

To assist with waste collection in the identified wards, Sasol has provided the Enviro-cycles used for its newly launched environmental education and awareness programme.

Ms Maureen Mboshane, vice president of Corporate Affairs, Sasol Secunda Operations, said:

“Sasol, as part of our global commitment to Responsible Care®, upholds the principles of the waste management hierarchy in prioritising the avoidance, reduction, re-use and recycling of our own waste as far as reasonably possible, and the safe and compliant incineration and disposal of our remaining waste footprint.

“This philosophy extends beyond our operations and into our communities where we are involved.”
