Farmers encourage residents to plant vegetable gardens at their homes

SECUNDA – Zimisele Start Vegetables Co-operative continues to alleviate poverty in the area through farming.

The co-operative consists of 48 members and began in 2008.

The organisation annually donates part of their harvest to various non-profit organisations and needy families.

This year they donated over 20 vegetable parcels to the elderly from eMbalenhle during their annual event at Esparanza.

Ms Iren Mamba, founder, prides herself for the achievements of the co-operative without being affected by the challenges they often face.

She is happy that the organisation received bigger land being leased from Govan Mbeki Municipality to farm on.

“This gives us a chance to increase our harvest which will increase our supply.

“We now supply vegetables to local supermarkets and vendors.

“We appreciate the assistance we received from the department, the municipality, Sasol and local businesses.

“We will continue to farm,” Ms Mamba said.

Ms Emily Magagula receives her pack of vegetables from Ms Iren Mamba.
