Gugu plans to make Secunda proud at Mrs SA pageant

In Ms Mahlangu’s journey of serving others, she realised that she wanted to be the mentor she never had, to other women.

SECUNDA – Ms Gugu Mahlangu (37) is a real, modern and God-fearing woman who was recently named one of the top 100 Tammy Taylor Mrs South Africa finalists for 2019.

The pageant is an exciting journey that is usually expected to only be taken by young women, but this pageant has a bigger purpose than just looks.

Mrs South Africa has given modern women the chance to compete as equals, flaws and all.

Ms Mahlangu was born and raised in Bethal.

She completed her matric at A.D. Nkosi High School and later studied human resource management whilst working. Ms Mahlangu is a human resources consultant at Sasol Synfuels.

“The best part about my job is that I get to hand over a contract that will not only change a persons life, but also their families’ lives.

“The pageant is looking for people who are change makers,” said Ms Mahlangu.

She is passionate about the upliftment of the community and more especially, uplifting women.

The passion she has for her job stemmed from her involvement in her local church, where she met her life partner, Mr Themba Mahlangu.They served at their church together and began a friendship that has now produced a seven-year marriage and two baby girls aged five and 15.

Ms Mahlangu moved to Secunda in 2012.

“What drew me to enter this pageant was that we could compete on the same level.

“We are not perfect, but we get to shine a light on women empowerment,” said Ms Mahlangu.

In her journey of serving others, she realised that she wanted to be the mentor she never had, to other women.

“There is no need to break other women down. We can link-up and build each other up.

“That is why I believe in sisterhood,” said Ms Mahlangu.

She has given a hashtag that she wants all women to remember and embrace: #SisterhoodMustContinue.

The Mpumalanga region has not yet taken the Tammy Taylor Mrs South Africa crown, and Ms Mahlangu is hoping she will be the one to change it this year.

Ms Mahlangu needs the support of the community in order to win.

“This is a very exciting journey for me where woman get to compete as equals with one objective in mind, to support other women through charity programs.

“Married women get the chance to showcase that we not only about beauty, hair, and nails, but we are the game changers. ” Ms Mahlangu said.
