Truck drivers in Ermelo want their voices to be heard

Mr Joshua Malatji, a truck driver from Rustenburg, said: “Truck drivers in South Africa are treated like dogs!

Disgruntled truck drivers from various companies in Ermelo voiced their dissatisfaction on 2 June, about among others, locals not being employed.

About 100 protesters gathered in solidarity in Havenga Street and protested against several government departments which they feel are unmindful of their afflictions.

Mr Joshua Malatji, a truck driver from Rustenburg, said: “Truck drivers in South Africa are treated like dogs.

“Our rights are not considered, we are not even allowed to attend funerals or bury our loved ones.”

He also said they work four to five weeks, but still, struggle to get a days’ leave.

“We are also humans and should be treated as such.”

The Highvelder reached out to one of the truck companies for a response on the allegations and will keep readers updated as soon as a response has been received.
