EVANDER – Four organisations, the SteduCentre and the SteduVi Club in Secunda, the Christ Church in Midrand and iMatter, took hands and hosted a holiday reading programme from Tuesday 18 June to Friday, 21 June at Osizweni Combined School.
Ms Tessa Stromvig, founder of the SteduCentre, said the fact that learners struggle to read, is not new.
“The progress in international reading literacy studies measured literacy levels and has found that more than 70 per cent of learners who took part in the studies, are illiterate,” said Ms Stromvig.
“The problem is that learners struggle to read and comprehend what they have read.”
This motivated Ms Stromvig to organise the reading programme and her aim at SteduCentre is to make a difference.
The tutors for the holiday programme began with the basics, the ABCs and then worked on phonetic sounds with the learners.
More than 50 learners attended the holiday programme with more than 20 volunteers helping to present the programme.
Some of the volunteers were as young as 10 years old.
“This week of fun-filled learning will be a norm at the school as we will continue with this programme during the various school holidays,” said Ms Stromvig.
