Priests robbed after returning from Angola

The men of the cloth were also hit and told to stay in the car and not to move.

Father Rocco Ssekweyama, one of the priests at the Roman Catholic Church in Standerton, had a harrowing robbing experience when returning from a visit to Angola.

He departed for Oliver Tambo Airport on 15 July to attend a symposium in Luanda and drove to Randfontein during which a colleague gave him a lift to Johannesburg.

His vehicle remained behind for his return journey to Standerton.

Fellow priests were in the car on 20 July when they travelled to Randfontein, with Father Rocco driving shotgun.

A new, grey car was noticed behind, passed them and they overtook at a later stage again.

“Unfortunately I can’t remember the number plates,” he said.

Upon arrival at the church in Randfontein, the car parked behind them.

“The next thing I heard was a voice saying in Zulu ‘bring the money’.

The men of the cloth were also hit, told to stay in the car and not to move.

A total of four assailants were involved, one remained in the car.

The money handed over comprised of 360 euros, $150, R500 as well as an additional $2 100 and some Zambian kwacha.

“We were tired after the flight, but I couldn’t sleep that night,” Father Ssekweyama concluded.
