The Lekwa West Circuit of the Department of Education held their awards ceremony at Hoërskool Standerton on Monday, 9 March where excellence was honoured.
The hall was filled with teachers, principals and stakeholders in eager anticipation of the trophies and certificates to be handed over.
Thuto-Thebe Secondary School excelled in being the best school in the NSC-examination, as well as best Quintile 1 School for both 2018 and 2019.
The school also received recognition as the most improved school for 2018 and Jandrell Secondary School was announced the most improved school for 2019.
Hoërskool Standerton had the most Bachelor-passes for 2018 and shared the distinction with Thuto-Thebe Secondary School for 2019.
Hoërskool Standerton also received recognition as the school with the most consistent excellence performance for 2018 and shared the podium with Thobelani Secondary School for 2019.
The best teachers from the different schools in the circuit were then announced.
For English Home Language P Britz and S Nezar from Hoërskool Standerton took the honours for respectively 2018 and 2019.

Jandrell Secondary School’s NJ Gcabashe was the best performing teacher in IsiZulu Home Language for both 2018 and 2019, while SM Buthelezi from Thobelani Secondary School was the best teacher in SeSotho Home Language for both 2018 and 2019.
Hoërskool Standerton’s A Boshoff was awarded in Afrikaans Home Language for 2018 and 2019, while the trophy for English First Additional Language in 2018 was shared by Thobelani Secondary School and Jandrell Secondary School for 2018, with Jandrell Secondary School also awarded for 2019.
Hoërskool Standerton’s N van Niekerk excelled in Afrikaans First Additional Language in 2019 and the school in 2019.
The school’s A van Rooyen was awarded in Agricultural Technology for both 2018 and 2019.
Thuto-Thebe Secondary School’s TR Nsibande was the top History teacher in both 2018 and 2019, while BR Bhana from Stanwest Combined School excelled in Geography in 2018 and 2019.
The best teacher in Business Studies in 2018 was S Nel from Hoërskool Standerton and NS Sibeko from Khunjuliwe Secondary School was the best in this subject in 2019.
Hoërskool Standerton’s M Koen went to the podium for Accounting in 2018 and 2019.
In Economics, MC Tshabalala from Jandrell Secondary School was the best teacher for 2018 and C le Roux from Hoërskool Standerton the best for 2019.
Consumer Studies’ awards for 2018 and 2019 went respectively to NS Malumane and M Sambo from Khula-Sakhile Secondary School, while M Herman from Hoërskool Standerton was awarded for Hospitality Studies in both 2018 and 2019.
Information Technology’s awards for 2018 and 2019 went to A Flack from Hoërskool Standerton, while M Lacock from the same school received an award in Computer Application Technology for 2018 and W de Jager for 2019.
Hoërskool Standerton walked away with the awards in Life Orientation for 2018 and 2019, while L Koekemoer and C Joubert from the same school received the awards in Engineering Graphics and Design for 2018 and 2019 respectively.

In Mathematics the school excelled with the teaching of E Viviers and S Steyn in 2018 and as an institution in 2019.
Mathematical Literacy saw R Viviers from Hoërskool Standerton being honoured for 2018 and ZJ Mkhwanazi from Khula-Sakhile Secondary School in 2019.
In Physical Science in 2018, A Flack from Hoërskool Standerton was the best teacher and for 2019, MG Mpofu from Jandrell Secondary School.
Hoërskool Standerton’s K Lacock was the best teacher in Life Science in 2018 and MT Maboea from Thuto-Thebe Secondary School the best in 2019.
The final awards for Best Mathematics and Physical Science School in 2018 and 2019 were handed to Mr Pierre Marais, principal of Hoërskool Standerton.
Thuto-Thebe Secondary School was honoured for Best Mathematics and Physical Science Quintile 1 School in 2018 and 2019.
Two learners from Hoërskool Standerton were also awarded, P van der Merwe for 2018 and Y Carrim for 2019.
Ms Ignus Uys, formerly from the department, received a certificate of appreciation as well for her contribution through the years.
Lastly, Thuto-Thebe Secondary School’s TR Nsibande received the trophy as best teacher. “He taught History to 37 learners of which 19 received distinctions,” Ms Yasmeen Mahomed, circuit manager, concluded.
