Traffic Officials need to be more present

SECUNDA – Commuting back and forth can on most days be nerve-wrecking and unruly motorists having no regard for the law or road users often lead to road rage.

By law every motorist must have a valid driver’s licence.
In order to obtain one of these, one first needs to study for your K53 learner’s licence and pass it.
One of the rules learnt in the K53 is that when you come upon a stop sign, you have to come to a complete halt so that your vehicle has no momentum.
It does not mean to simply slow down or pause. The same rule applies when a traffic light that is out of order.
It means that if the lights are not working or flashing red and you are approaching this sign, you must stop and give way to traffic as though you are at an intersection with stop signs.
There is exception only if there is a points duty officer or traffic officer present who are directing traffic.
These are close encounters that are unnecessary and could have been prevented if the law was adhere to.
“Many motorists do as they please, they have no regard for other road users.
What is more upsetting, you will see they have children in their vehicles.
If they are not concerned about others’ safety, then surely they should have concern for those children they are transporting.”
“Our roads have become a Kyalami track, we need traffic officials to do their jobs and regularly monitor our roads. Is it going to take a fatality before something gets done?” a concerned motorist asked.
“You will see traffic officials in the peak hours, but during the course of the day they are nowhere to be found. When there are traffic officials everyone will be law abiding, but once they leave, the roads become a free for all,” said the motorist.
These concerns raised were directed at the traffic lights by the Secunda Mall in PDP Kruger Street and the stop streets near schools, among many others.
The Ridge Times sent these concerns to Govan Mbeki Municipality’s communications offices via email on 3 March.
It was evident the email was read due to the next morning’s visibility of traffic officials. Govan Mbeki Municipality has however, failed to respond to questions at the time of going to press.
