Teachers from Masizakhe Secondary school in Breyten protest at Ermelo Department of Education

The concerned teacher said there is only one general worker who has been tasked with ensuring all classrooms are effectively sanitised and disinfected.

Teachers from Masizakhe Secondary School in Breyten, armed with posters displaying their discontent with the Department of Education, protested outside the regional offices of the department in Ermelo on 6 July.

According to a teacher, who wants to remain anonymous, the school cannot function as per the instructions from the department, because they are currently understaffed and working on a reduced budget.

The concerned teacher said there is only one general worker who has been tasked with ensuring all classrooms are effectively sanitised and disinfected.

“This person alone cannot possibly be efficient in his duties, as there are several classrooms and also other responsibilities to which he has to attend.”

He stated that there were eight Grade 12 classrooms and 18 Grade 11 classrooms that requires daily disinfecting and sanitising.

There is also just one person that has been trained by the department and assigned to take learners’ temperature every morning when they arrive at school.
