Thistle Grove Combined School learners hand over memorandum at police station

They accused the school of not following the Covid-19 regulations

KINROSS – Grade 12 learners from Thistle Grove Combined School want the Department of Education to trim the exam papers.

The learners suggested that the department should set the papers according to what the learners have learned this year.

They said they have lost over three months of the academic year due to the Covid-19 national lockdown.

These learners claim that there is no way they can catch up and that not all of them had the privilege of studying online.

The concerned learners marched to the local police station to hand over their memorandum on Wednesday, 1 July.

Thabo Ndobe, learners representative, said their future is at risk and only the department can minimise the risk by setting the exam papers according to what learners have learned.

“We are peaceful and marching for our future.

“We were told that the exam paper has been already set and our concern is that we missed so much time due to the pandemic.

“The remaining time is not enough for us to catch up and the school does not have resources to make this easy. Unlike some school we do not have the online facilities and most of us were struggling even during the lockdown to study.

“We didn’t have data and the electricity crisis in the area made things even worse.

“We are calling on the department to consider our requests stated on our memorandum.”

The learners also raised concerns about hygiene and sanitising at the school.

They claim that the school is not fully complying to health protocols of the Covid-19 regulations.

The memorandum was handed over to Mr Japie Masilela, the school principal.

Mr S Molepo, acting circuit manager, addressed the learners outside the police station and promised that he will take they will prioritise their concerns.

Learners were not happy with the responses however said they will wait for the responses.
