Provincial commissioner calls for community to avoid violence after man is assaulted in Secunda

The victim reported the matter to the police and a case of assault with the intent to cause serious bodily harm (GBH) was opened.

Lieut-Gen Semakaleng Manamela, provincial commissioner of the police in Mpumalanga, called on the public to be tolerant of each other and not to use violence to resolve differences.

This comes after Mr Dean Venter (29), Mr Frank van Meyeren (36), Mr Jonathan Vermeulen (41), Ms Sonia van Meyeren (47) and Mr Johannes Vermeulen (50), were arrested for assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) last week on June 29 and 30 respectively.

According to information received, the man who was allegedly asaulted, confronted Ms Sonia van Meyeren, after she allegedly reversed and bumped his vehicle close to the police station in Secunda.

An argument ensued between the two. The suspect is said to have made a phone call and moments later four men arrived on the scene and then severely assaulted the victim.

The suspects made their first appearance at the Secunda Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, June 30and were released on warning.

They will appear at the same court on July 27.

Lieut-Gen Manamela strongly condemned this act and urged the community to resolve matters amicably or alternatively request police to intervene.

“We will not tolerate such conduct which threatens the lives of others. There are other ways in which issues can be resolved peacefully,” said Lieut- Gen Manamela.
