BETHAL – Members and volunteers of AfriForum’s Bethal branch and Why Wait Skip IT recently cleaned an area of Bethal after refuse was dumped there illegally.
Mr Hennie Bekker, AfriForum’s district coordinator for the Lowveld, said the field next to Malherbe Street where some residents began to dump their refuse, was cleaned.
The residents merely dumped bags full of refuse there, presumably as a result of poor service delivery by Govan Mbeki Municipality.
According to Mr Bekker, Why Wait Skip IT has in the meantime been appointed to weekly clean the refuse bins in town.
The contractor will weekly clean the 30 AfriForum refuse bins in town and remove the refuse. AfriForum in Bethal then also helped Bethal Police by removing the station’s refuse with the help of the new contractor.
“Govan Mbeki Municipality simply failed to remove the refuse,” said Mr Bekker.
Bethal was also recently yet again, left without water and AfriForum hurriedly made arrangements with a farmer to deliver water on Saturday, June 12, at a water point at the AC Church in Bethal.
“Govan Mbeki Municipality’s poor service delivery results in more and more services having to be performed by the civil society of Bethal.
“They have almost been completely immobilised and residents are left with no other choice but to begin doing things themselves.”
