Msukaligwa Local Municipality extends credit amnesty to all residents

As an example, if a consumer owed R200 as of December 31, 2020, and pays R100 or more, the rest, up to a further R100, is written off.

MSUKALIGWA – Msukaligwa Local Municipality’s consumers will be given special incentive to have their debt written off, until August 31.

This is possible to all qualifying consumers, allowing “once-off incentives per consumer” with debt ending on December 31, 2020.

According to a notice released by the municipality, this is aimed at improving service delivery and to inculcate a culture of payment for services rendered.

The municipality encourages consumers to participate in this initiative.

Mr Mandla Zwane, spokesman of Msukaligwa Local Municipality, confirmed that all municipal account holders whose accounts are behind from March 2020 to December 31, 2020, qualify for the amnesty.

The once-off incentive per household will be implemented as follows:

• A once-off arrangement with the affected consumers who immediately pay 50% of their outstanding debt as on December 31, 2020; the remainder (the other 50%) is immediately written off; or

• A consumer who applies pays 50% off the debt over a maximum period of eight months from the date of application, but not later than August 31, and the remaining 50% of their debt arrears will be written off, once the settlement is finalised and provided the current account is paid up to date.

As an example, if a consumer owed R200 as of December 31, 2020, and pays R100 or more, the rest, up to a further R100, is written off.

The municipality stated that consumers need to honour their current accounts at all times.

According to Mr Zwane, consumers are advised to first come and/or call the municipal financial department to state their case and sign an agreement before making a payment.

He said after an agreement has been signed, consumers who are making payment using their banking apps should remember to use their municipal account number as reference.
