Two men still at large after business robbery in Amersfoort

AMERSFROOT – A 36-year-old suspect is due to appear before the Amersfoort Magistrate‘s Court in connection with a business robbery that occurred during the early hours of August 18.

Police along with off-duty officers residing in the area were alerted about the robbery at a shop in the Zamokuhle location.

Upon their arrival, police found the suspect and two other men.

The two men were spotted on the roof of the shop and the suspect inside the shop.

Col Donald Mdhluli, the spokesman for Mpumalanga police, said, “The two men on the roof fled when they spotted police while the remaining suspect reportedly exited the shop in possession of a firearm.”

According to Col Mdhluli, a shooting ensued and the suspect was shot and injured.

He was admitted to the hospital where he is currently under police’s guard.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is currently investigating the incident.

Amersfoort police have in the meanwhile launched a manhunt for the two men who are still at large.

Lt Gen Semakaleng Manamela, the provincial commissioner for the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga, welcomed the arrest of the one suspect as well as the confiscation of the firearm and ammunition that was in his possession.

The suspect faces charges of an armed business robbery, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

His court appearance has been set for September 2.
