Kasselman Security Services (KSS) sent information on Friday, September 10 about a burglary at a business at the Oriental Plaza.
According to Mr Jannie Kasselman, roof security is becoming more important in an increasingly safety and security-conscious society.
“Many roofs have become the weakest point-of-entry for burglars, even when the premises are secured with efficient locks and shutters on doors and windows,” Mr Kasselman said.
The following tips were given:
• All rooftop hatchways, air ducts and air vents should be covered by security bars that are securely fastened. Glass skylights should have burglary-resistant glass and security bars or a steel grill. These bars should be further secured by padlocks.
• Don’t make it easy for the burglars to get up on your roof by having exterior ladders or a trash container against your exterior wall. Ladders to your roof can be relocated indoors and you can move and secure your trash container away from your exterior wall.
• Install motion sensors in your ceilings to detect any movement
• Place beams around your premises so that trespassers can be detected before even making it to your roof.
• Ensure that you have sufficient lighting around your premises to deter criminals from entering your premises and increase your chances of seeing someone lurking around your garden.
• Ensure that your roof tiles are securely fixed to the roof-structure and therefore will not be easy to remove.
• Install an additional layer of galvanised iron sheeting underneath your roof.
• You can even install additional battens to narrow the gap between battens.
