Mr Sanele Msimang is due to appear in the Standerton Magistrate’s Court on October 28 in connection with murder.
His previous appearances in court were on March 18, March 23 and March 24.
It follows a missing person report for former captain, Johannes Engelbrecht, in October last year.
Police launched a search for the man, known as Brakkies.
The Standerton Advertiser reported on the human bones found in Newcastle in its edition of April 2 this year.
The bones were kept for investigation purposes at a government mortuary and mistakenly collected for Newcastle.
According to a police statement, the accused confessed to police officers at the Harrismith Police Station on March 1 last year that he killed a man in Standerton.
The body was buried in a shallow grave.
Mr Msimang was detained at the Harrismith Police Station and transported to Standerton on March 15.
The investigation indicated that the information was correct and a post mortem had to be conducted and DNA samples collected.
The suspect was remanded in custody, pending mental observation.
According to the records department at the court, he is still in custody.
