Parents in the Govan Mbeki municipal area are worried about their children’s future

“The circuit manager phoned us and asked if we received space for our children. How can he ask that since he is the one who is supposed to tell us where to take our children.”

Parents of the children who didn’t get space in schools around the Govan Mbeki municipal area are concerned about their children’s future.

They accused the Department of Basic Education’s Secunda circuit offices of ignoring them.

The parents visited the offices on Wednesday, January 26, for the second time since schools reopened.

These parents said they followed all the instructions given to them by the Department of Education, but the circuit office is sending them from pillar to post.

“Our children were not placed in schools, though we registered on time and now we are already at the end of January.

“As we are here at circuit offices, they are promising us to place our children. This is the same promise we heard on the day the schools opened,” said one of the parents.

“The circuit manager phoned us and asked if we received space for our children.

“How can he ask that since he is the one who is supposed to tell us where to take our children.

“We went to different schools where they told us to go to circuit offices, but the circuit offices refer us back to those schools,” said another parent.

These parents also accused the Department of Basic Education of misleading the country when they claimed that all learners are in class and no learner is sitting at home.

They also said their children are falling behind with the school work.

Jasper Zwane, Mpumalanga Department of Basic Education spokesman, said parents need to be patient as they are working hard to place their children in classes.

He said the Secunda circuit offices are engaging parents and school principals on the matter and no learner will be at home without school.
