Tsalanang Hostel residents in eMbalenhle are concerned about leaking water that led to some taps drying up.
According to residents, it has been three years since reporting the leak, but the Govan Mbeki Municipality does not repair the burst pipes.
Muziwakhe Ntshalintshali, a resident, is surprised that although there are also municipal employees living in the hostel, nothing has been done.
“Municipal employees have to jump over this water leak every day and we wonder what are they thinking.
“Our municipality owes millions of rand to Rand Water but they don’t care about their infrastructure which is leading to the escalation of debt.
“We have been reporting this issue for the past three years and no one cares about it, we are losing many litres of water,” said Ntshalintshali.
The leaking water also damaged the paved road in Crossroad Section.
Ridge Times contacted the municipality about the water problem at the hostel, but Lucky Mhlongo, acting head of communications for the municipality referred the newspaper to the Govan Mbeki Housing Company.
Mhlongo said the company is responsible for the maintenance of the hostel on behalf of the municipality.
The GMHC said Tsalanang Hostel’s situation has become dire because of a task team led by Ntshalintshali.
The company said the task team has misled the municipality and the hostel residents and then barred GMHC from entering the premises.
“Ntshalintshali went as far as telling the GMHC maintenance team that he will stone our bakkies if he sees them at Tsalanang again.
“How can he say that hostels are not maintained?,” asked Busi Mazibuko, manager at GMHC.
