Top matriculants of 2022 awarded at Sasol Secunda’s Grade 12 Merit Awards

Ten full bursaries were handed out by Sasol to the overall top achievers.

Through a special invite, the top Grade 12 learners of 2022, who obtained three to seven distinctions in selected subjects, were awarded prizes at the 28th Sasol Secunda Grade 12 Merit Awards, hosted at Sasol Recreational Club on January 27.

Teachers and best-performing schools from around the Gert Sibande District Municipality were also awarded by Sasol for their excellence in education.

Recognition certificates were awarded to the best educator in mathematics and physics, the overall best-performing school and the best-performing educators in quintile 1-3 schools for science, engineering and mathematics.

Ten full bursaries were handed out by Sasol to the overall top achievers.

The annual awards are to motivate learners to take up science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects, and eventually pursue careers in these disciplines.

Included in the awards were learners from schools that are supported by the Osizweni Science Centre. The centre is a Sasol education flagship initiative for maths, science and technology and has been in operation since 1991.

“This is a proud moment for Sasol. This year marks 28 years since the inception of the Sasol Grade 12 Merit Awards, and approximately R900 000 was awarded to learners,” said Victor Bester, Sasol’s senior vice-president.

A total of 753 964 full-time and 167 915 part-time candidates registered to write their final matric exams in 2022.

A total of 278 814 learners achieved a bachelor’s pass.

Sasol has invested about R1.9b over the past five years in education, of which R473m was channelled to bursary programmes across South Africa.

The evening awards saw Ho rskool Hoogenhout receive the overall best-performing school in technical mathematics in the Standerton sub-district and Ehlanzeni Region.

Mkolishi Secondary School took the best-performing school in physical sciences in quintiles 1-3. The most improved school went to Langa Secondary School.

The top four achievers, with seven distinctions, all came from Ho rskool Secunda.

They are Johannes Jacobus Harmse, Masindi Joshua Nekhubvi, Mercy Lizann Thomas Ambat and Lianke de Vries.

Lianke de Vries was also awarded the overall top achiever in Gert Sibande and Ehlanzeni region.
