Bronkhorstspruit Police launch campaign against women and child abuse

Constable Cathrine Ramovha said, “The campaign raised awareness of the negative impact that violence and abuse have on women and children and to rid society of abuse permanently.”

Lieutenant Colonel Sibonisile Mlaba, Vispol commander, together with Mali-Martin Polokegong Centre, launched the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children Campaign recently.

The campaign was held at Zithobeni, Section S, in Bronkhorstspruit policing precinct. It was hosted jointly with stakeholders such as the CPF, SANCA, Department of Health, Kungwini Local Municipality, EMS, Sassa, IEC, NYDO and HCI Coal.

Constable Cathrine Ramovha said, “The campaign raised awareness of the negative impact that violence and abuse have on women and children and to rid society of abuse permanently.”

Mlaba urged the community to report sexual offences and any violence perpetrated against women and children as well as the elderly.

She also gave a stern warning to the community that the police will have a zero-tolerance approach when it comes to GBV.

Mlaba was joined by Warrant Officer Moses Mabena who is a Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit investigator and social crime prevention coordinator Constable Cathrine Ramovha, who is responsible for domestic violence-related matters.

The members teamed up to address the scourge of GBV and femicide. Ramovha warned community members to refrain from withdrawing their cases after registering them.

“Some of these cases are withdrawn before the suspects are arrested or cases are presented before the courts, others are withdrawn while they are already on the court roll,” said Ramovha.

In some instances, the victims or survivors of crime are influenced by their relatives to withdraw cases. During the campaign, Mabena addressed the audience gathered at the event and shared safety tips on how to prevent GBV.

Mabena said, “People must break the silence on abuse. I further advise that no rape case can be solved at home or tribal offices. These must be reported to the police immediately.”

Mlaba encouraged men to join the initiatives aimed at raising awareness against gender-based violence and related issues.

“Community members had the opportunity to listen to messages from other speakers who shared their views and safety tips. Various other presentations were displayed through different items such as singing and drama related to GBVF,” said Ramovha.
