Entities handed over state-of-the-art old age centre in Leandra

Abednego Lukhele, the Zamelani Abadala Old Age Group chairperson, said love and respect have kept them together over these years.

Thungela partnered with the Govan Mbeki Municipality to hand over a fully-fledged facility to the Zamelani Abadala Old Age Group Centre members in Lebohang on August 1.

The organisation, which has operated for the past 35 years, offers a social life and healthy lifestyle to more than 60 senior citizens of Lebohang.

During construction, the project provided local residents with employment and business opportunities.

Eugene Moremi, the general manager of Thungela, said his company was proud to complete the project in collaboration with local stakeholders and this was their way of giving back and investing in the community.

Abednego Lukhele, the Zamelani Abadala Old Age Group chairperson, said love and respect have kept them together over these years.

Thandi Ngxonono, the MMC for Civil Engineering, acting on behalf of the mayor, said the handover was proof that working together in partnership with the private sector can produce remarkable outcomes.

She called on the youth to take care of senior citizens.

“It worries us a lot that some pensioners are abused by their children. Violence against senior citizens must come to an end. Elderly people need respect and love so they can live longer,” said Ngxonono.
