Leandra police conducts a search in schools

Constable Nontobeko Ngubeni, the Leandra police spokesperson, said they identified grades six and seven as problematic at Osizweni. The police found a few boys smoking glue.

The Leandra SAPS members visited Laerskool Leandra and Osizweni Special School for children with special educational needs.

They also conducted a school safety awareness campaign. At Laerskool Leandra, the officers warned the learners about bullying and disrespecting teachers.

The station commander, Lieutenant Colonel Khuselwa Matrose, also reminded the learners of the importance of education. She encouraged learners to report any criminal activities, either at school or in their community, to the police.

“It is our duty as police to protect our community, including you as learners, to ensure their rights are protected and they are not being abused,” said Matrose.

Ngubeni said after the search, they called the identified learners to the school hall where the police officers could speak to them and encourage them to do the right thing.

“The campaign followed after numerous complaints from the school about the learners who are extremely misbehaving with bullying, theft, sexual offences and substance abuse on school premises. There are many older boys in the school,” said Ngubeni.
