Ext 15 residents accuse GMM of misleading them about water supply
Donald Green, media liaison and content development officer at GMM, said the municipality is calling on all residents and businesses to reduce water consumption to save the municipal reservoirs from running dry, resulting in water shortages and subsequent prolonged water supply interruptions.
The Ext 15 residents in eMbalenhle are accusing the Govan Mbeki Municipality (GMM) of misleading them about the water supply to the area.
These residents said their water problem began right after the construction of the water reservoir in the area – and long before the current Rand Water crisis.
According to residents, the municipality called a community meeting last year where promises were made that the water issue would be a thing of the past once maintenance was done on the reservoir. However, things are now worse than ever.
“We were without water for a month. Then we were supplied by water tankers during the maintenance period and told that afterwards, there would be no more interruptions.
“But that didn’t happen. Our situation has worsened. We are worried what will happen if our reservoir must begin to also supply water to Charl Cillers, ” said a concerned resident.
“This means we will not have water at all.”
Another resident wants the municipality to come clean about the reservoir’s water capacity.
“We are always told the water level is down to 5%, or it has run dry. I don’t think we have ever heard that it is full.”
Some residents demand to be supplied by the Adullam water reservoir like many other sections in eMbalenhle, citing that the Ex 15 reservoir cannot supply them with water.
Donald Green, media liaison and content development officer at GMM, said the municipality is calling on all residents and businesses to reduce water consumption to save the municipal reservoirs from running dry, resulting in water shortages and subsequent prolonged water supply interruptions.
Green said Rand Water is pumping water at half capacity to the municipality and as a result, the municipality is experiencing challenges with some of its reservoirs in high-level areas, like Ext 15.
“Water trucks are also available to affected areas to ensure continued water supply until full restoration is achieved,” said Green.
