Zonderwater commemorates Heritage Day with a cultural showcase
The Heritage Day celebration at Zonderwater Correctional Services featured traditional music, dance, and cultural displays, emphasising unity and shared history.
The Zonderwater Correctional Services in Cullinan transformed into a cultural hub hosting a vibrant Heritage Day celebration that honoured the Afrikaner, Batswana and Basotho communities on October 4.
This annual event sees three cultural groups competing for top honours under the watchful eye of adjudicators from the Department of Sports, Arts, Culture, and Recreation.
The Heritage Day celebration at Zonderwater Correctional Services featured traditional music, dance, and cultural displays, emphasising unity and shared history.
The acting area commissioner, Josias Mokobane, highlighted the significance of honouring cultural diversity in the workplace, urging everyone to embody the national motto, “Diverse people unite”. (ke e:/xarra/ke).

Mokobane noted the event fostered national pride and strengthened bonds within the department, reminding everyone it is not about competition but the values that unite South Africans.
“This celebration is not about competition, but a reminder of the values that unite us as South Africans, even within the correctional services environment,” said Mokobane.
The adjudicators noted they judged the groups on best group performance, best-coordinated group and best-dressed group, with the overall winner to be selected from these categories.
As they visited the stands, they praised Zonderwater for its vibrant celebration of heritage, which included delicious cultural foods and energetic traditional dances.

Adele Lamprecht, representing Batswana for the day, emphasised the importance of celebrating, preserving, and promoting cultural traditions and values.
“It is also essential to have fun and enjoy ourselves in the workplace, especially on a day like this,” said Lamprecht.
The excitement peaked when the Correctional Centre A representing the Afrikaners took the overall award, with Batswana sharing in several other categories.
Looking ahead, Bafana Mbokane revealed the 2025 celebration will feature the Coloured, Ndebele and Tsonga cultures.
“We are committed to reclaiming not only our heritage but also our pride and dignity as South Africans,” Mbokane concluded.
