Mayor’s action angers residents of Cullinan
“It feels like the residents’ voices are not being heard, and the promises made are evaporating.”
Concerned residents gathered in Onverwacht, Cullinan, awaiting the newly appointed mayor of Tshwane, Nasiphi Moya, on October 11.
The office of the mayor of Tshwane initiated the Tswelopele Clean-Up campaign. According to Tshwane Ward 100 Clr Johannes Bekker, officials arranged this gathering with promises to clean the township.
“The initiatives, which included enhanced waste management protocols, frequent street cleaning and increased maintenance, were highly anticipated by residents who have long been vocal about the litter and disarray affecting their neighbourhoods,” said Bekker.
However, Moya announced the postponement of several promises that would have improved cleanliness and public health in the community.
“The mayor cited no reasons for the delay, leading to frustration among community members, who feel their concerns have been sidelined,” added Bekker.
According to him, the postponement has sparked criticism from various factions in the township.
“Some residents expressed disappointment, arguing that the promise of a cleaner environment was a cornerstone of the mayor’s campaign platform.”
Bekker said he is campaigning for environmental reforms throughout Ward 100.
“You do not make promises you cannot implement. It feels like the residents’ voices are unheard, and the promises made are evaporating,” remarked Bekker.

Bekker said community organisations are calling for a renewed commitment from Moya, urging her to prioritise cleanliness as a fundamental aspect of public health and quality of life.
“With the postponed initiatives, residents are left wondering what steps will be taken in the interim to address the growing litter problem.
“As the township grapples with the implications of the mayor’s decision, it remains to be seen how these postponements will impact the community’s morale and the long-term efforts towards sustainable cleanliness and beautification.
“However, in the face of these, some community members are taking matters into their own hands by organising neighbourhood clean-up events, demonstrating a grassroots commitment to improving their surroundings,” Bekker concluded.
