Cullinan artist Ashley Mdaka Dlamini fills the spotlight

Dorette Labutte had a conversation with Cullinan artist Ashley Mdaka Dlamini in a Q&A session about his artistic journey and his latest exhibition at the HK Contemporary Art Museum, Gallery, and Studio.

Q: Tell us about yourself?
A: I am Ashley Mdaka Dlamini, a 30-year-old artist originally from Thembisa, who made Cullinan my home since 2018.

My art has provided me with immense comfort, joy, and a path of self-discovery. I am thankful for the journey that has moulded me into the artist I am today.

Q: Tell us about your artistic journey?
A: Art has been woven into the fabric of my life since preschool.

I feel I was born with a creative spark that has only grown stronger over the years. What began as a childhood passion evolved into a lifelong commitment. As a self-taught artist, I have honed my skills through continuous experimentation and exploration.

Q: How would you describe your artistic practice and style, and what mediums do you favour?
A: I am a full-time artist who explores a variety of mediums, with a particular fondness for acrylic and oil paints. I also enjoy watercolours, charcoal, pastels, and mixed media.

Acrylic paint truly captivates me – how varnish brings everything to life feels almost magical! My artwork often features dreamlike figures, merging realism with whimsical ideas. Each piece draws inspiration from my journey, emotions, and the world around me.

Q: Who inspires your work?
A: I find inspiration in several artists, including the late Picasso, Hardus Koekemoer (owner and curator of HK Contemporary Gallery), fellow Cullinan resident, Lientjie Wessels, Mimi van der Merwe, and many others.

Koekemoer has been a significant influence since we connected through Facebook in 2012. His honest critiques and guidance have been invaluable.

Q: How has Hardus Koekemoer impacted your artistic journey?
A: Our friendship has been enriching; he combines honesty with humour, making our interactions enjoyable and insightful.

He taught me the nuances of art collection, helping me to appreciate and select exceptional pieces.
His mentorship has significantly shaped my artistic vision and helped me grow as an artist.

Q: Tell us about your current exhibition?
A: I am thrilled to present Tribute to Mickie (Oupakie) at the H HK Contemporary Art Museum, Gallery, and Studio, 1 Stinkwood Road, Cullinan, this month.

This exhibition is a heartfelt homage to flowers, honouring my beloved canine companion, Mickie. It will be on display until 17 November, with opening times Friday to Sunday from 09:00 to 16:00.
