Teen from Secunda wants to play rugby in Spain
Young rugby players needs sponsors to join Mustangs team on tour.
Jared Davies, a Grade 11 learner at Hoërskool Secunda, was chosen as the captain of the Mustangs U19-rugby team which is part of the New Beginnings Sports Development Academy.
He played in the trials in the Rhino Week in Vanderbijlpark in June and was also chosen as Man of the Match.
The Mustangs will be touring Spain in December and the cost is about R50 000 per player. Cobus van Rooyen, founder of New Beginnings, said they help rugby players to get to a certain level in their sporting careers.
“We have a lot of interest in our players from overseas clubs. The goal for the Spain tour is to give our rugby players the opportunity to play rugby where they can be identified to become permanent or contract players at international rugby clubs,” said Van Rooyen.
Van Rooyen said Jared is one of the rugby players whom he and the other rugby coaches think has a very good chance of getting an international contract.
“It is rare that we see a player from a small town with his type of talent.”
Davies plays for Hoërskool Secunda’s first and second rugby teams and he has played in the Bokkie Rugby Week twice.
He began playing rugby in primary school already and then he used to play cricket and golf as well, but these days he is only focussing on his rugby.
His dream is to become a professional rugby player one day and his second career choice would be to become a mechanical engineer.
In his free time, he enjoys going to the gymnasium, riding dirt bikes and even working on the dirt bikes like a mechanic. Someone who he looks up to and who inspires him on the rugby field is Malcolm Marx.
“He is calm on the rugby field and his lineouts inspire me to do better in my lineouts as well,” said Davies.
