Dam levels continue to decline in Mpumalanga

The DWS urges the public to use water sparingly as dam levels continue to drop.

According to a media statement released by the Department of Water and Sanitation, dam levels in Lekwa continue to suffer declines.

The current recorded drop in dam levels is significantly lower than those recorded at the same time last year.

“This steady drop in water reserves underlines the urgent need for water conservation as a key measure to ensure sustainable water supply and water security in the province,” explained the statement.

The latest report states the average dam levels in Mpumalanga have dropped from 79.1% to 78.5%. The Gert Sibande Water Management Area declined from 79.4% to 78.9%.

Currently, the only dam that has remained unchanged is Morgenstond, keeping steady at 67.6%

Furthermore, Grootdraai Dam dropped from 70.5% to 70.3%, Nooitgedacht dropped from 76.2% to 76.0%, Vygeboom declined from 90.1% to 88.4% Jericho Dam suffered a decline from 66.3% to 65.0%, Westoe from 36.3% to 35.1% and Heyshope from 95.3% to 94.8%.

“The DWS calls on all residents, businesses and institutions in Mpumalanga and beyond to conserve water by reducing consumption, fixing leaks and avoiding unnecessary water usage wherever possible,” concluded the statement.
