Karatekas competed in Karate South Africa (KSA)’s national karate championship on February 22 and 23 at the Sasol Recreation Club.
The Western Cape won the championship and obtained 14 gold medals, nine silver and 15 bronze while Gauteng finished second with nine gold medals, eight silver and 10 bronze.
The Free State finished third with five gold medals, eight silver and nine bronze while KwaZulu-Natal finished fourth with two gold medals, two silver and four bronze and Mpumalanga finished fifth with one gold medal and five bronze medals.

Local karateka, sensei Breshnev Dhlamini, who also has the Shotokan Karate Club in Secunda, excelled and obtained a bronze medal in the Kumite category for senior men.
The other karatekas from Mpumalanga who excelled are Richman Mabena who obtained bronze medals in the Kumite category for veterans and masters and in the Kata category for veterans and masters and Dumile Mlungu who also obtained a bronze medal in the Kata category for veterans and masters and finished fifth in the Kata category for veterans and masters,
The Mpumalanga senior team also excelled and finished third in the team Kumite section. This team consists of Matthew Conlan, Siyabonga Khanye, Bhekinkosi Kubheka, Surprise Magabane, Sipho Mathibela and Sibusiso Motsweni.
