Blood bank honours event organisers at event in Secunda

Anita de Beer was controller of the year, while her employer was the corporate institution of the year.

The Teksa branch of South African National Blood Services (SANBS) held its annual controller function on Saturday to thank the people who helped them organise blood drives.

The controllers were the guests of honour at this function in the Glaskas at Lake Umuzi in Secunda.

Branch manager Sister Sanet Kalse said the SANBS needs 824 000 units of blood annually to produce about one million blood products like platelets, plasma and red blood cells.

“One in every four people will need a blood transfusion during their lifetime, but only 1% of our population donates blood.”

Danie Heese is the principal of Laerskool Kruinpark.

Kalse said the Teksa branch’s area, which includes Standerton and Delmas, collected 98% of their 2024 target. The target was 23 056 units, of which they collected 22 576.

According to Kalse, the mobile blood drives saved the day, bringing in 12 966 units and are when the controllers play a major part. They organise a drive in their community and ensure donors support it.

The Bethal CPF received the organisation of the year award. Anita de Beer was controller of the year, while her employer was the corporate institution of the year.

The Thomas Nhlabathi Secondary School received the award for the school of the year, and Laerskool Onverwacht walked away with Adopt a Day campaign accolade.
