Standerton’s ‘knitwits’ work hard throughout the year
According to Sangeeta Daya, Standerton's 67 Blanket ambassador, the women take on several fun projects, including mystery crochet challenges.
The Standerton 67 Blankets for Mandela Day women met on March 29 to review their trip to Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) and continue working on several projects they are currently taking on.
These women gather once a month to show off their progress and share knitting and crochet knowledge.
According to Sangeeta Daya, Standerton’s 67 Blanket ambassador, the women take on several fun projects, including mystery crochet challenges.
“This month, each knitter received mystery patterns with different pictures they could discern after completing most of the square,” explained Daya.
The women formed a team to work the mystery squares into one blanket. The 67 Blankets initiative brings warmth to less fortunate people in honour of Nelson Mandela. Standerton has around 30 ‘knitwits’ – an affectionate nickname adopted by the 67 Blankets volunteers.
Currently, several women are spending time joining squares to create blankets. Volunteers made several of these squares while enthusiastic knitters donated the others.
