Man discovers worms in fish from supermarket in Evander
The store management team said they prepare fresh fish daily.
A man was disgusted when he recently bought fish from a local chain supermarket and discovered there was maggots in the fish. He made the discovery after taking the first bite.
As the man was working and travelling with his colleagues to the next job, he did not have time to take the fish back on the same day, as it was also shortly before the closing time of the supermarket.
His manager heard about the incident and took the fish back the next day.
“Nobody there really wanted to help me and when I showed them the photos of the rotten fish that I took the previous day, they just said sorry and gave my worker his money back,” said Pieter Maré.
“As I was waiting for the manager to come, I noticed all their food was open and flies were sitting on it, as I lifted my phone to take photos of it, they quickly covered the food.”

The Ridge Times got comment from the management team of the store and they said: “Our deli fish is freshly prepared in-store daily and no other complaints regarding this batch were received.
“The fish was returned to the supermarket two days after it was purchased, by a representative of the complainant, without proof of purchase.
“A refund was immediately issued and to prevent similar instances in future, store management enquired how the fish was stored between purchase, consumption and return.
“Three days after the purchase, a health inspector also assessed the supermarket, including the deli, and confirmed that all health and safety standards were met.

“Food safety and the health of our customers is of the utmost importance to the supermarket chain and its products undergo regular testing and quality checks.
“Should customers be dissatisfied with any item, we kindly request that it be returned to the nearest supermarket with proof of purchase for an exchange or refund, and further evaluation.”
Maré said he has till slips and the photos he took with his phone has a date on to proof when it was taken.
“If they are saying they prepare it freshly, how is it possible that it had worms in. The eggs of worms take two weeks or even longer to hatch,” asked Maré.
The Ridge Times could not confirm which health inspector was visiting this grocery store after enquiring Govan Mbeki Municipality and Gert Sibande Municipality.
