Standerton Hospital’s nurses celebrate their special day

The Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (Denosa) hosted more than 1 000 nurses in Bushbuckridge on May 12.

Over 1 000 nurses from across the province gathered in Bushbuckridge to celebrate International Nurses’ Day on May 12.

The Standerton Hospital sent 31 of its nurses to commemorate and celebrate the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the mother of modern nursing.

According to Standerton Hospital nurse Sabelo Tshabalala, the Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (Denosa) hosted the gathering.

During the event, a chorus of over 1 000 voices recited the Nurses’ Pledge of Service, promising to maintain the utmost respect for human life.

Several important figures in the field, including the MEC of Health, Sasikani Manzeni, the second deputy president of Denosa, Linah Jiyane and Denosa general secretary, Kwena Manamela, delivered motivational speeches.

“To me, the most important point we discussed was the safety of nurses in health facilities,” said Tshabalala.

According to Tshabalala, nurses face several safety risks in the facilities where they work, specifically assault and robbery by patients. Nurses from all the districts in Mpumalanga attended the successful event.

“The event showcased the nursing profession to the public and promised to maintain a good health status in the community by ensuring we spread awareness and practice early screening and treatment,” concluded Tshabalala.
